Backhoe vs Excavator: A Year with the Sany SY135C Changed Our Equipment Buying

Pick a small excavator like the SY135C if your work is site prep, grading, trenching, demolition, or landscaping at a scale where the machine stays in one place for the majority of a shift. The 360-degree swing, the attachment flexibility, and the lower repair frequency will outwork a backhoe on those jobs.

Run both if your volume supports it. We kept a compact backhoe for tight jobs and cleanup. The two machines cover different lanes, and the fleet is stronger for it.

Bottom line: the backhoe vs excavator debate isn't about which machine is "better." It's about which machine fits the hours you actually sell. Measure that honestly, and the decision makes itself.
