Here's the first thing I tell anyone who calls me about construction equipment: the price tag is the least reliable number on the spec sheet. I get called at 3 AM when a machine dies mid-project—I've coordinated 200+ emergency equipment orders over the past eight years. And the pattern is always the same: buyers who compared only sticker prices end up paying for it in downtime, rush freight, and lost days.
So whether you're spec'ing a SANY SY80 excavator, hunting down SY16C parts, or googling "what is a telehandler" for the first time, do one thing before you sign: run the total cost of ownership math. TCO isn't a consultant's buzzword. It's the only number that tells you what a machine will actually cost you.
Why I Get Called at 3 AM
In my role coordinating equipment fulfillment for contractors, rental fleets, and small mining operations, I handle the messes. A client's excavator throws a track two days before a major concrete pour. A landfill operator's trash compactor seizes up on a Wednesday. What I like about the SY80 specifically: the cab layout is genuinely good, which matters more than people think when operators spend eight-hour days in it, and the hydraulic system is tuned for smooth, precise digging. Most 8-ton machines do everything OK. The SY80 does the common stuff well.
But here's the catch, and this is where TCO thinking kicks in. The machine's long-term cost depends on the infrastructure around it, not the color of the paint. Ask your local dealer these questions before you even negotiate price:
- What undercarriage parts are stocked locally?
- What's the lead time for a hydraulic pump or final drive motor if one ever fails?
- Do they stock SY16C-compatible parts too, if you run a mixed fleet of mini excavators?
That last one sounds like a non-sequitur, but it's not. I'll explain why in a second.

The SANY SY16C is a compact 1.6-ton mini excavator. It's the kind of machine a landscape contractor, a plumbing company, or a utility crew buys because it fits through a garden gate and still digs a decent trench. Good machine. But its real test comes the first time a part fails.
The incident that changed how I work: a client called me the Friday before a two-week shutdown window. He needed a hydraulic filter kit and a couple of line hoses for his SY16C before the shutdown ended, because that was his only maintenance window for months. I said "we'll get it sorted as soon as possible." He heard "it'll arrive early next week." I meant "let me get a tracking number to you today." What Is a Telehandler? (And Should It Be Your Next Rental?)
Straight answer, free of jargon: a telehandler is a machine that does what a forklift does, but with a telescopic boom instead of fixed forks, and it's designed for rough terrain. The boom extends forward and up at the same time, which means it can place materials where a regular forklift physically cannot reach.
Every time I explain this to a contractor whose entire experience is forklifts and pallet jacks, the conversation goes the same way: "So it's a forklift with extra steps?" No. It's a forklift with a whole extra dimension. It can lift a pallet of bricks to a second-floor level, reach over an obstacle, and set the load exactly where you need it—without building a ramp or bringing in a crane. Swap the forks for a bucket and it becomes a mini loader. Add a winch attachment and it can pull itself up steep grades. There's a reason rental fleets can't keep telehandlers on the lot.
But is one right for you? That depends on your jobs. If everything you do is on flat, paved ground, a forklift is cheaper and simpler. If your sites have slopes, mud, elevation changes, or any need to place things at height—roofing materials, steel beams, precast elements—you should strongly consider a telehandler. Even renting one for a month to test it against your actual job mix is a smarter move than guessing.
The Machines Nobody Thinks About Until They Stop
Excavators and telehandlers get all the attention. Trash compactors and haul trucks just sit in the background of a job site, working, until they stop. Then suddenly they're the most expensive machine on site.
Take trash compactors. If your operation involves demolition or landfill work, the compactor is the bottleneck—it's the machine that keeps the waste stream moving. A downed compactor doesn't just mean one idle machine. It means every truck waiting to offload, every digger slowing down, every crew kicking their heels. When I help spec a compactor, I look at compaction force, wheel configuration, and how easy it is to service the undercarriage. The sticker price tells you almost nothing.
Heavy Haul: Moving Material at Scale
If you've ever stood near a fully loaded rigid-frame dump truck, you know why some crews call them hummer trucks. Everything vibrates—the frame, the exhaust stack, the ground under your boots—with that low, constant mechanical hum. These are unglamorous machines that just move material, day after day, until they don't.
If you're buying one, the TCO math gets even more extreme. Payload capacity, fuel burn per ton moved, tire life, brake component cost—small differences in any of these multiply across thousands of operating hours. Five Numbers That Tell You What a Machine Really Costs

- Purchase price. The starting point. Not the answer.
- Operating cost per hour. Fuel, consumables, wear items. Two machines with the same bucket capacity can burn fuel at very different rates. Check the spec sheet, then ask an owner—not a dealer.
- Maintenance intervals and cost. A machine that needs service every 250 hours costs you 100 more hours of downtime per 1,000 hours than one that runs 500 hours between services. Do not ignore this number.
- Parts lead time in your region. Not the factory's global average—your local dealer's actual average. Ask for it in writing.
- Resale value. The most ignored number on this list. A machine that holds 60% of its value after five years is effectively cheaper than one that holds 35%, even if it cost more upfront.
Add those five numbers across the hours you plan to operate, and you'll get a figure that actually reflects your costs. That's the one worth comparing between brands. Industry estimates put unplanned heavy equipment downtime at $1,000–$3,500 per hour once crew costs, lost production, and penalties are factored in. That single range should change how you think about any machine's price tag.
When to Ignore Every Word of This
I don't want to hand you a framework and pretend it works in every situation. It doesn't.
If you need a machine for one specific project and won't reuse it, rent—don't buy. The TCO math for a one-off job rarely justifies a capital purchase.
If dealer coverage in your region is weak for the brand you're considering, the best TCO numbers in the world won't save you. A good machine with a great local dealer beats a great machine with a good local dealer, every time.
And if cash flow is the real constraint—and it is for many small operators—then I understand why purchase price matters more than I'm making it sound. I've been in that position. But even then, look at the resale curve and parts availability before you decide. Those two numbers will tell you whether the cheap machine is honestly cheap, or just cheap now.
