What I’ve Learned the Hard Way
Last spring, one of our regional dealers sent me a listing he was excited about: a used SANY SY26U posted on Truck Paper, 1,100 hours, fresh paint, priced about $9,000 below market. He wanted me to sign off on it from the photos. I told him I couldn’t — and wouldn’t — without standing next to the machine with a ruler in my hand.
I’m a quality and compliance manager at SANY. I review equipment before it reaches customers — a few hundred machines a year, plus parts batches. Over the last four years, I’ve rejected roughly 8% of the used machines that came through our pre-qualification process. Not for bad paint. For cracked swing frames, mismatched serial numbers, and one memorable case where the machine in the listing photos wasn’t the machine on the trailer.
This is the checklist I run on every compact excavator I evaluate — the SANY 26 excavator included. It works for most SANY earthmoving equipment, from mini excavators to wheel loaders. If you’re serious about a listing on Truck Paper or a dealer lot, run these eight checks first.
Who This Checklist Is For
This list is for contractors, rental operators, and small fleets buying a used digging machine for utility, landscaping, or demolition work. It’s written around the SANY 26 — the SY26U, a 2.6-ton mini excavator with roughly 2.5 m of digging depth per SANY’s published spec sheet. That’s the machine I get asked about most. But the same checks apply to any used excavator or loader.
One honest limit: if you’re buying a machine sight unseen from another continent, this checklist is not enough. You need a certified third-party inspection or boots on the ground. And if you need a zero-emission machine for indoor work, a diesel mini — no matter how carefully inspected — is the wrong tool. Don’t let a good checklist talk you into a bad fit.
Check 1: Verify the Machine’s Identity
The serial number stamped into the frame is the machine’s true ID. Stickers peel. Titles get sloppy. Truck Paper listings sometimes use stock photos. Ask the seller for a close-up of the serial plate, then compare it against the title and bill of sale before you drive out there.
What most people don’t realize is that mismatched serial numbers are a leading cause of title-transfer delays. I once saw a 2019 SY26U wearing a 2017 plate because a rental house had swapped a cab door. The machine was fine. The paperwork took two months.
Check 2: Treat the Hour Meter Like a Suggestion
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: hour meters can be rolled back. It’s not common, but it’s common enough that I never trust one on its own.
Cross-check the meter against physical wear. Are the pedal rubbers smooth at 1,100 hours? Does the seat cushion carry five years of sweat? Is the bucket cutting edge rounded off? A walk-around tells you more than the display ever will.
The “low hours = good machine” thinking comes from an era when meters were mechanical and harder to tamper with. That’s changed. Digital meters are easier to reset than mechanical ones, not harder.
Check 3: Measure the Undercarriage
This is the most expensive repair on a mini excavator. On a 2.6-ton machine like the SY26U, a full undercarriage replacement can eat 30–40% of the machine’s used value. If you ignore everything else, ignore the paint and measure the tracks.
You’re checking four things: track chain tension, sprocket tooth profile, idler play, and rock damage around the top and bottom rollers. Hooked sprocket teeth mean the chain is near the end of its life. Track sag outside the spec in the manual — usually 10–20 mm for this size class — means the tensioner or the chain is tired.
The upside of a below-market price can vanish fast. Is a $9,000 discount worth a $6,000 undercarriage in six months? I’ve watched buyers answer that question incorrectly.
Check 4: Test the Hydraulics Warm
Arrive early, start the machine cold, and let it warm up while you walk around. Then run the boom, arm, and bucket through full cycles. Watch for three things:
- Cylinder drift — hold the boom at shoulder height for two minutes. If it drops more than an inch, the cylinder seals are bypassing.
- Leaks at the rod glands and hose ends. Small weeps can be cosmetic. Steady drips are a bill.
- Quick-coupler play — lift the bucket and wiggle the attachment. Slop here gets expensive fast.
I do not mean a minor weep. I mean a droplet every few seconds, in the same spot, while the machine sits idle. That’s pressure loss, and pressure loss is money.
Check 5: Cold-Start and Engine Health
Open the radiator and look at the coolant — only when cold. Milky residue means water intrusion, and water intrusion means a head gasket or worse is in your future. Pull the dipstick: burnt smell, foam, or a gritty texture are all red flags.
With the engine warm and idling, run the old blow-by test. Take the oil fill cap off and see whether the crankcase puffs. A little mist is normal on a high-hour diesel. Rhythmical puffing is ring wear. Blue smoke under load is oil burning; white smoke that doesn’t clear is coolant burning.
Check 6: Look at the Attachments, Including the Drill Bit
The package deal usually includes a bucket, sometimes an auger or a breaker. If there’s a drilling attachment in the bundle, inspect the drill bit closely: worn or chipped carbide buttons, a bent shank, or damaged threads tell you the previous operator ran it far harder than any maintenance schedule recommends.
Attachments are also the easiest place to hide wear. A fresh cutting edge is cheap to weld on. A drill bit, on the other hand, wears honestly — and that honesty is useful to a buyer.
Check 7: Confirm Parts and Dealer Support
SANY earthmoving equipment is sold through a global dealer network, and parts availability for popular models like the SY26U is generally good. But “generally” is not “always.” Plug your location into the dealer locator before you wire the money. If the nearest dealer is 400 miles away, that 15% purchase price saving will evaporate in freight charges and downtime.
If the machine is a grey-market import or a model your regional dealer doesn’t support, walk away. No price is good enough to own a machine you can’t get parts for in under a week.
Check 8: Operator Safety — And the Crane Accident Question
This is the check most buyers skip. If the machine will ever do lifting work — setting pipe, placing landscape material, or loading onto a trailer — confirm the lifting aids are present and in good shape, and ask about operator training.
You’ll find a lot of equipment safety debates online, including the crane safety quiz question: “Which of the following is the most dangerous factor among crane accidents?” Based on OSHA’s crane data, the answer is power line contact — electrocution. It is consistently a leading cause of crane-related fatalities, and it is the factor that gives an operator the least warning.
Per OSHA’s construction crane standard (29 CFR 1926.1408), lifting equipment must stay at least 10 feet away from unguarded energized lines up to 50 kV, with a dedicated spotter on duty.
That same discipline applies to an excavator on any site with overhead lines. A machine doesn’t need to be a crane to become a conductor.
What I’ve Learned the Hard Way
After four years and a couple hundred machine reviews, I’ve come to believe that used-equipment deals are won or lost on the undercarriage, the paperwork, and the oil — not the paint. Here are the mistakes I see repeat:
- Buying from photos. A Truck Paper listing is a starting point, not a condition report. If you can’t travel, hire an equipment inspector. It’s the cheapest repair you’ll ever buy.
- Skipping the oil analysis. A used-oil test costs about $50–100. A main bearing failure costs thousands. Looking back, I should have run the oil analysis on every candidate, even the clean ones. At the time, I figured service records were enough. The records were real — the oil told a different story.
- Ignoring pins-and-bushings wear. Worn pins make a machine feel sloppy and attack every bucket connection. Greasing a mini excavator takes twenty minutes. The previous operator probably spent zero.
- Buying the wrong machine because the price was right. If your work is 80% indoor demolition, a diesel mini excavator is the wrong tool, no matter how clean the inspection. The SY26U is compact — it is not emission-free.
No checklist can guarantee a trouble-free machine. But these eight checks separate the honest deals from the ones that only look honest. If you’re looking at a SANY 26 excavator or any other piece of SANY earthmoving equipment — on Truck Paper or anywhere else — take the time. The machine will still be there next week. A bad purchase will bother you for years.
