Most equipment problems are documentation problems. I'm comfortable saying that now. After four years of reviewing roughly 200 equipment-related deliverables each year—spec sheets, dealer listings, operator manuals, safety labels, and serial tags—the pattern is clear: a machine fails early when someone made a wrong assumption before it arrived on site. Always buy the machine you can document, not the machine you can describe.

Buy the serial number first

Model numbers group machines. Serial numbers identify a machine. When someone asks me which Sany mini excavator is right for them, I don't answer with a model name alone. A Sany SY26U is a compact machine built for tight spaces, light digging, and easy transport. A Sany SY75C is a different work envelope entirely. If the model name in a listing isn't matched by the serial plate and the build sheet, you don't actually know what you're bringing to the site.

But frost heave, rocky soil, and wet ground conditions can put hidden stress on an undercarriage, so the history matters more than the one photo in the ad. The right manual is part of the machine

A telehandler is not a set of attachments that happen to share a frame. It is an engineered lift machine with load charts that depend on the exact configuration. I see searches every week for a Sany telehandler manual, and my first warning is this: use the official manual that matches the serial number, not a scanned PDF from a third-party download site. A generic manual can carry outdated hydraulic pressures, wrong lubrication intervals, or missing load chart pages.

The load chart is not a suggestion. The rated lift capacity at a specific boom angle and extension assumes certain tires, stabilizer positions, and attachments. If someone installs a non-approved attachment, the load rating can become invalid. The manual explains those limits because the limits are part of the machine's safety system. When I inspect content before it reaches customers, I treat the manual as a quality specification. Buyers should treat it the same way.

The difference between two similar machines often looks like a great deal until the wrong attachment arrives, the wrong manual is downloaded, or an unqualified operator shows up on site. Those problems surface on day one and disappear on no one's invoice.

What I want buyers to remember is simple. Machine quality starts with specifications, but it is protected by documentation. Match the serial number. Read the official model-specific manual. Confirm the operator has the right certification and training. A machine cannot argue with a load chart or a service interval. The person responsible for the machine has to do the homework before the machine earns its keep. Do that, and the equipment has a fair chance to work the way it was designed to work.
